It seems every student knows what bullying is and why it’s a bad thing. The question remains then, why do we still have to deal with it? I’ve done a fair amount of research from articles, non-profit organizations, and personal experiences. No one has an answer as to how to stop bullying outright. One thing is clear to me: No matter how many tools we give children to deal with bullying, their best resource is a kind and trusting adult.
The students at Bridgeville Martial Arts are fortunate enough to have parents and guardians that can give them another safe place. I hope that kids can go home and continue to talk about the topics we bring up in Brave Academy. Kids that have a safe and caring environment with someone willing to listen, seem to be less likely to become a bully or to let bullying bother them. It’s not up to kids alone to put an end to bullying, but a combined effort of teachers, caregivers, and parents.
5 Helpful Tips
-
Listen.
Be an active listener with compassion and don’t overthink your response while listening.
-
Perspective.
Try not to be dismissive about an issue if it’s upsetting to kids. Something might seem small to us as an adult, but that small thing can take up a kid’s entire world!
-
Comfort.
Say that you understand. Being comforting and offering reassurance that a kid chose to talk to you can go a long way.
-
Honesty.
Everyone appreciates honesty. If you don’t have an answer or solution, it might be okay to say that, however it is important to make it clear that you’ll work to find a solution.
-
Respect.
We constantly remind students that martial arts begins and ends with respect. In reality, respect should never stop.
